Marigold salve

The mixed species marigold salve that I made does seem to work for repelling bugs as well as speeding the healing of minor wounds. I tested it's mosquito repelling properties today in several shady mosquito hangouts in our yard. Did it work because of the marigolds, or..was I just too greasy for the mosquitoes to bite? I'd like to believe it was the marigolds, because the lemon balm infused olive oil that I made and tried previously is much less effective.
