Does it make you sneeze?
Goldenrod has an annoying reputation for some people, but I have found it to be harmless for myself. Last year I used it in infusions and made an extract for later in the year. I like the taste of the flowering tops the most and the golden green color of the extract. Mmm I'll make myself a cup right now! My neighbor was out and he looked alarmed when he saw what I was carrying in my basket as I walked to my yard after my latest gathering foray. "Did you know that stuff will do things to you? My wife can't be around it without sneezing.", he said. I laughed, picked up a handful of my goldenrod, and inhaled it's mild sweet fragrance. He was truly amazed that it did not affect me in a similar negative way. He was shocked to discover that there are many pharmaceuticals that affect me oddly and negatively. Simple ones like Advil, and serious ones like opioids that rather than relieve my difficulties add to them in intolerable ways. The diversity of life is so interesting and it's best to avoid generalizations in many areas, I believe. I can never tell anyone with complete certainty that a plant or pharmaceutical will work or not work for them as it has for me. Allegedly goldenrod can have a positive effect on the urinary system and sore throats among other things. I'm just enjoying the invigorating properties it has for me right now.
