This is one disturbing subject to me. What the heck is a colonic first of all? Aha-it is the 'flushing' of the colon via introduction of something up the rectum. Oh that is SO not happening to this old woman! I can see no benefit in such a thing, and furthermore, it is a highly unnatural sort of thing! Our colons are designed for one direction motility, as is all the equipment associated with them-such as our precious anal sphincters! A huge myth that perpetrators of colonics propagate is that we may have accumulated old waste material in our colons. If such was the case, then a megacolon would result. A megacolon is a colon that has been stretched by accumulated feces. Oh, no thanks! Here is some nice information regarding children and megacolon that I found: http://www.virginia.edu/uvaprint/HSC/pdf/12012.pdf Constipation can be a terrible thing that can indeed lead to seriously bad heath problems. I'm not writing about mild and temporary constipation, I'm thinking about the kind that occurs as a result of medications or serious body disturbances and that lasts longer than a few days. Doctors do prescribe enemas for that sort of thing, and super yuck-who wants one? Enemas and hydrotherapy colonics seem to be the same sort of thing. If you absolutely had to have one due to a severe case of life threatening constipation, or the need of some special medical procedure- well-O.K. and wouldn't it be safer to have it administered by some properly trained and licensed health professional? I would definitely seek remedy that went with the normal flow first if I had a bout of constipation. Eat something or drink something to increase peristalsis first. (a spoon full of olive oil can work wonders, and grape juice never fails me) Of course, if one has the unfortunate mishap of a paralyzed gut, that won't work, and the best people to discover and treat such a thing are indeed our licensed health care professionals. So, there is no such thing an an accumulation of toxic waste in the bowel when the bowel is functioning. No, you do not have three year old steak hiding in the mysterious folds of your intestines. Think of how many times you have pooped in the last three years! It is a biological impossibility, as long as bowel movements are occurring regularly, or somewhat regularly. What goes in, must be processed and the wastes must come out. Fecal impaction can lead to death. Fecal impaction is not simply being constipated. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/supportivecare/gastrointestinalcomplications/Patient/page3 So, are colonics actually dangerous? You bet! http://www.mayoclinic.org/colon-cleansing/expert-answers/faq-20058435 http://www.livescience.com/15912-colon-cleansing-useless-dangerous.html http://www.health.harvard.edu/healthbeat/HEALTHbeat_072208.htm#art1 And the absolute is that-no one is fiddling with my anus-unless there is a lot of evidence suggesting that I might need a colonoscopy! Guard your anus and colon as well-for your health and wellness.
