So here it goes, another decent herb in the arsenal will no longer sit boldy by the dried chamomile, devil's claw, turmeric, etc. Any kratom I have left on September 28th will be given to the wind, but don't bet I will be hobbling to another disappointing doctor for some ineffectual poisonings. Speaking of..https://naturespoisons.com/2014/07/01/mitragynine-kratom/ I just had to go and read it. Funny, I never feel Mother Nature is out to kill me dead constantly. I hobbled unharmed through a passel of bumble bees gorged on passion flower nectar to check my mail. Ah, the joys of a pesticide free garden! Now for my rebuttal of that farce in electronic print! Is kratom an opiate? Hmm, well, that depends on the definition of opiate: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/opiate Kratom is in no way derived from opium, or the plant that produces opium. Thus it would seem that kratom is not an opiate. As for the implications of kratom in forensic toxicology, are kratom alkaloids the sole substances present? Are there other potentially detrimental substances present? Lets study some reports about kratom, and some reports about a legal popular psychoactive poison.
Consider the overall mortality rate from the legal and ubiquitious alcohol: Almost 90,000 people die from alcohol anually. Many people become addicted to alcohol, and many people are incarcerated and suffer loss of their motor vehicle operation priveledges. A staggering number of families in the U.S. suffer economic and health hardships due to alcohol. https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohol-health/overview-alcohol-consumption/alcohol-facts-and-statistics The most vulnerable segments of our society are destroyed by alcohol. Children even become addicted to alcohol. People have been known to kill while intoxicated on alcohol, either with their vehicles or with other weapons. Alcohol causes a horrible birth defect called fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Not every person that tries or occasionally consumes alcohol becomes an addict, but addiction can be of insidious onset over differing periods of time depending on the individual.
How many deaths has kratom caused without a doubt in the U.S. in 2015? Oh dear, I haven't found one! No, not one death. Lets think about what the National Poison Data Center divulged:
2010 to 2015 saw a whopping 660 calls involving kratom exposure and one resulted in death from a combination of drugs along with the herb kratom. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/866904
It is left to speculation which substance in particular was the actual causative agent, since all of the drugs involved had lethal potential.
What is the justification for condoning and promoting known poisons and disallowing, disparaging and villifying a seemingly far less toxic plant? My subjective self experiment is at an end. I'm going to be a little less energetic and a little less mobile but I don't expect I'll freak on out because I will no longer have kratom. I do expect to be a bit more peevish due to the natural side effect of living on minimal sleep and unblunted constant pain. I have ingested kratom on a weekly basis since October 2015 and the worst side effect has been constipation which was easily remedied by increasing my water and fiber intake. I never once felt high. I don't know for sure though. If being in a slightly less peevish mood because I was slightly more comfortable is being high, then yeah, I reckon I have been ripped, or whatever one calls it these days. I sincerely hope that Richard Nixon is miserably toiling under the lash in the underworld.
