Surfing news stories, I ran across something I found to be particularly appalling: http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/Latest-News-Wires/2013/0622/Bee-kill-off-in-parking-lot.-Pesticide-blamed
A thing that I have noticed in my own garden is fungally infected aphids which have shown up over the past few years. They are white and quite fuzzy. At first I thought it was a fancy new breed until I did some research! To preserve the bees here, I refuse to use pesticides. Luckily, I have plenty of home made soap, which I mix with water to make some nice suds in a squirt bottle. I spray the aphids with this and it beats them back for a bit. The soap doesn't harm anything else. The only drawback is that I have to re apply after every rain.
