One thing that actually grew semi well for me this year was my beloved hot peppers. My one cayenne plant gave me a good supply, and my little Thai pepper plant almost kept up. My experiment with growing totally chemical free vegetables was otherwise disappointing due to massive stink bug invasions. These rascals are just a small part of the satisfying pepper stash:
When I feel a cold coming on-out comes the pepper. I make an onion pepper bouillon broth that seems to help ease congestion and give strength to my youngest and myself. My other daughter is too sensitive for eating many spices, so she gets the rosemary sage pepper steam vapor treatment if her sinuses get clogged. I can't say that this would work for everyone, or even for us with every cold, but during this first round of disease torment it certainly helped. Last year, I didn't get to employ peppers like these because I didn't have them. A wise woman once told me that my yard would grow what I need, and in this case perhaps it is true. I must not have needed that squash that the borers destroyed. I am mourning the loss of my goldenrod due to fungus and my mother's lack of discernment between it and Chinese pear shoots. Poor thing, she really doesn't see well when it comes to useful plant identification.
