In all my forty three years of observing organisms in my life, I have yet to see one refrain from self defense when attacked by another creature. Self defense may be as simple as camoflage, fleeing from a predator, exuding an unpleasant substance or a bloody battle. Whatever it takes, life wants to live and life must consume in order to live. Then, I look at the world of humans and the artificial social constructs that have been created. One construct which is rapidly gaining popularity is the publicising of bullying and how to handle such things. http://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/ I am all for stopping such unseamly behavior, but I believe in a different approach that recognises humans as living organisms that have the same right of self defense as all other organisms. What if your child is in an isolated location with no helpful authority figure in sight? Usually such a situation is the preference of bullies. So, what then? That is when the right of self defense comes into play. It is a good idea to teach one's children a few simple tricks which may help if a situation does arise. The idea is not to 'win' or 'lose' some fight. The idea is to do whatever it takes to survive. I have never seen an antelope surrender to a cheetah and live. The act of bullying between humans is the product of a stunted mind, usually accompanied by a stronger body than the target of the unconscionable behavior. So, I teach my children some clever little tricks, and to look for things in their environment which may aid in their self preservation. I teach them to do whatever it takes to survive, and to give it all they have, just like any other living organism would do. I consider an act of physical aggression an expression of intention to end life, and that it should be handled accordingly. If the opportunity to run like the antelope presents its self, do so. If there is no opportunity to run, never surrender life peacefully. Never. We will face whatever consequences together, just so long as my child has made it through alive, because that is the most important thing. I'm not even going to mention the results which would ensue from death. Peace is preferable, but sometimes there is need of that which is primal.
I just had to up date this area of my opinion today with a much better set of information that I find rational about the subject which goes into greater depth than my simplistic explanation:http://www.bullyonline.org/schoolbully/myths.htm Yes, this all makes perfect sense.
