I once was firmly aligned with the notion of public education as a right and proper way to gain wisdom. This notion has been in decline for several years and finally, I just couldn't take another minute of the rigmarole disguised as education. The things that are put into text books lately seem more a type of marketing than an honest impartment of factuality! A couple of things that really got me were partial division (WTF!?!Yeah, we can do it that way, but why bother?) and Speedy Printing. Speedy Printing refers to a 'problem' in my daughter's geometry book. I nearly gag at the remembrance! The 'problem' went something like this: A person needs a printing service. Speedy Printing claims to be the best and fastest service available. Answer in back of book: Choose Speedy Printing. Oh barfomatic! Not only does this have absolutely nothing to do with the beautiful formulas of geometry, it is not a fair analysis of any available options, unless it is a clear reference to a business monopoly! My disgustometer maxed out and I began researching and planning the extraction of my valuable minds from the Matrix of blind consumerism. Here in South Carolina, there is a wonderful way that a concerned mother can extract her children from undesired indoctrination and also teach them beyond any local public curriculum. I joined the most affordable local homeschool association that satisfied the requirements of law, and began building individual curricula for each of my girls. Yeah, I could have purchased some, but none seemed to offer all that we desired. I did purchase an online subscription as a sort of organisational guide, and I am finding that my oldest daughter is way beyond it, so she is studying mostly from assorted texts of interest handily purchased on Amazon or inherited from my own college days. The beauty of independent schooling is the ability to go beyond what is offered in conventional grade levels! This is true also of my youngest daughter that would have been in public 6th grade this year. I'm looking forward to dodging the piles of papers sent home weekly. A great deal of my girls finished works will be done in digital formats. Not only will it help our environment, it will increase their cloud computing skills. I see this as a winning combination for the job markets of their future.
