As I have written previously, I couldn't care less about any laboratory tests imposed by the current physician regarding my body's cholesterol levels. I suspect that cholesterol is not the demon in atherosclerosis, but rather the underlying reason that the epithelial cells lining the arteries let the LDL molecules through to be altered and eaten by dedicated macrophages which then mutate, die and cause problems is of much greater concern. I can't imagine what led modern medicine to accept the results of inhumane treatment of innocent rabbits as a viable model for the incurrence of disease in humans. What makes it really awful is that it wasn't just one study done by a deranged person in Russia decades ago. I discovered another incident of misfeeding and maltreating sweet little rabbits as an attempt to bolster the cholesterol theory. Yuck. Have a look if you want to get irate: http://atvb.ahajournals.org/content/16/12/1454.long
There are so many things wrong with this. Has everyone forgotten that rabbits have evolved to dine herbivorously? Innocent rabbits have also been geneticaly altered to express human lipases, etc. in the attempt to make them more viable models for human disease. How many levels of yuck does that transcend? Still, on the key fundamental levels, in spite of the manipulations, these creatures are meant to graze. If lions were fed strictly vegan diets, they too would develop health problems and illnesses. I can't give any scientific weight to any findings based on cruelty to animals so very much unlike humans. I have developed a particularly soft spot for rabbits lately. My daughter was gifted two baby rabbits this spring and they are members of our family. Unfortunately, they can't have the run of our entire house because we do have our pitbull, but they do have freedom in quarters with my daughter. They play with their toys and frolic in their exercise area, and we obsess constantly over the best hay and where we might find appropriate organic vegetables for them. They know their names. They come to us to be petted. They are producing excellent future fertilizer for the garden, I can't imagine the sort of person that could willfully do harmful things to creatures such as these. I would rather eat grass than eat a rabbit now. If I had to choose between some fat grub worms and a rabbit for a starvation situation meal, I'd pick the worms.
